Holier than thou?

Have you ever had someone accuse you of being “holier than thou” whilst in the middle of an argument or even an all out fight over what the Bible says? It’s one of the heavier assault weapons that the enemy launches at us just to get us to backdown. The reason it’s such a successful weapon is that Christians are supposed to be humble, and accusing a Christian of thinking that they are superior to someone else is a cunning tactical move. This strategy is so effective because it hits us right in our humanity. It gets our eyes off the point of contention and onto US! Pretty slick trick!
Once my dad said, “Hey, if someone accuses you of being holier than though, just look them straight in the eye, and say, ” yes, I am”. Holy means set apart, and I choose to be set apart and consecrated for YHVH’s purpose. You could choose to be set apart too, if you would stop arguing with me, and see what His Word is requiring. This isn’t about me, it’s about what the Bible says, and you don’t like what it has to say right now because it’s in disagreement with how you want to live your life.

Remember, holiness is not a synonym for superiority. Don’t let someone else manipulate the word into meaning something that it doesn’t. Call them on that fallacy and direct the conversation back onto the Word and off of you.
